Earning Physical Education Credit for Playing a Sport
A student-athlete may earn 1/4 of a PEcredit each year that they are in high school. To earn the 1/4 credit, they must participate in 90% of team activities and finish the season "in good standing". The coach will be the one to determine if a student-athlete has completed the 90%.
The PECredit is based on 5 items, and it counts towards a student's graduation: 1. Physical fitness 2. Motor skill development 3. Participation (90%) 4. Sports Fitness 5. Following the athletic code of conduct with no infractions. Traditionally, we use the end-of-season rosters to determine who has met this requirement, because it is expected that you "cut" any student-athletes who are not participating or showing up. If a student-athlete has disciplinary infractions that would leave them not "in good standing" with the team (at any point in the season) they will not be given the PE option credit. So if you have someone who is suspended because of grades, discipline, etc. they may not receive PEcredit.
Earning a Varsity Letter
To earn a varsityletter, the student-athlete must complete an entire VARSITY season with a 90% participation rate. The student-athlete must complete the season and finish in "good standing". The student-athlete may not violate the code of conduct or be suspended at any point to earn a varsityletter. The varsityletter does not count toward graduation at all. For example, a team manager may earn a varsityletter for completing a full season, but they may not earn a PE option credit.
Overall, the big difference is that the PE Option goes toward the student-athletes' graduation, and the varsityletter is an award for completing a full season on a varsity team. So you can earn a varsityletter, but not earn a PEcredit. Also, you can earn a PE option credit by playing on a sub-varsity team, but not qualify for a varsityletter. I've attached a picture of our course outline for the PE Option.
